Nandi hill is an ancient fortress built by the Ganga dynasty and later it was used and strengthen by Tipu Sultan (then ruler of Mysore). Currently, it is a famous tourist destination and many tourist visits there every day. It is an ideal day outing from Bangalore and nearby cities.

During the Chola dynasty, it was called Anandagiri means mountain of happiness. Later it was renamed Nandi hill. There are two theories behind its name change.
  • From outside, this mountain looks like Nandi (Bull)
  • There is an ancient Nandi temple on the hilltop.

Indian Rail: The nearest railway station is Chikkaballapur which is well connected with many Indian cities including Bangalore, Hyderabad, etc. You can use a bus service or private taxis to reach Nandi hill from Chikkaballapur railway station.
 
Buses: The nearest bus station is Chikkaballapur which is well connected with many nearby cities like Bangalore, Kolar, Mysore, etc. Many government and private buses are available to reach  Chikkaballapur. You can use a bus service or private taxis to reach Nandi hill from the Chikkaballapur bus stand.
  
Airport: The nearest airport is Bangalore which is around 38 km from Nandi hill. You can take private taxis outside the airport to reach Nandi hill.
 
Private Taxis: Finding Taxis or Auto rickshaw in Nandi hill is very tough. Better to use either your own vehicle or rent it for the whole travel duration.

As it is a very famous tourist destination near Bangalore, many tourist visits there every day. You will find a few restaurants and snack counters. Very limited food options are available there.

  1. It is of interest to note that six rivers originate from these ranges — Arkavathi, Chitravathi, Papagni, Uttara Pinakini or Pennar, Dakshina Pinakini or Ponnaiyar, and Palar.
